Autumn Book Round Up!

This week is children's book week.

As a teacher it is only appropriate that I share some books and talk about the importance of reading with babies and children.

The Booktrust have published a list of the 100 books children should read before they are 14. It is a good list but not exclusive. Certain key titles have not made the list with the author represented by one title. But it is a good list for parents or teachers to look at to get some ideas of titles to share and show to their children.

L is already a member of our local library. She was signed up and only a few weeks old. She has also just received her Bookstart pack.

I have been a library member for about as long. I can still remember trips to the library to choose books. One of the first official letters I received in the post was about an over due library book. Needless to say I had to sign L up as soon as I could.

We have borrowed a few books. Mostly board books because I have none of these in my teacher book collection. We have borrowed lots of black and white books which L loves to stare at.

The books I do own however are books for all seasons, I own books for cultural celebrations and key events in a child's life.

So today I am sharing my Autumn book round up. A few titles most appropriate for this season.

These books have been read to and shared with a Reception class but they are by no means limited to this age group.

Ferdie and the Falling Leaves Julia Rawlinson and Tiphanie Beeke

About a Bear Holly Surplice

Pumpkin Soup Helen Cooper

Why Do Leaves Change Color? Betsy Maestro (an American book so excuse the spelling UK readers, it does make for an interesting discussion with astute children who notice this)

These books all use beautiful illustrations to explore the colours of autumn, if you have just come in from an autumn walk these books will help keep the ideas and discussion alive.

Ferdie is a particularly endearing character who is very concerned about his favourite tree losing its leaves but there is a wonderful surprise for both Ferdie and young readers about the magic of the seasons changing.

Why Do Leaves Change Color? is a science book which really explains why leaves change colour and gives a great page identifying leaves which would be wonderful to take with you on your autumn walk. Much of the book is using scientific vocabulary which will be very thought provoking for the younger readers of this book. If you are going to do any dye work with leaves this book explains the pigments in leaves.

Pumpkin Soup is a lovely story about working together and the different strengths of our friends. Brilliant to read and share while you might be cooking with your little one.

About a Bear isn't about autumn or the season but is full of autumn colours and ends with the Bear settling down for a nap with his other hibernating friends. It rhymes wonderfully and talks about all the things Bear can do and be.

I hope you find something to enjoy in this collection. They should all be available at your local library or book store if you want to keep one on your book shelf. Because of course these books aren't only good to read in Autumn. Joining your local library opens up a whole wealth of knowledge and experience to your children and young people in general I can't emphasize enough how important it is to go along! And it is free! Free books.

Join in the discussion by using #educationmatters in your tweets to talk about the importance of books and reading with young children.
